Neubearbeitung
Kälin Daniel, Kempf Oliver (2009) : High-resolution stratigraphy from the continental record of the Middle Miocene Northern Alpine Foreland Basin of Switzerland. N. Jb. Geol. Paläont. Abh. 254/1-2, 177-235

A few meters above the base of the «Oehningien» one or two thin bentonite layers have been recorded (FAVRE 1911, HOFMANN 1958a, KÄLIN et al. 2001). At the locality Combe Girard 41, one of these bentonites is associated with a small mammal fauna, indicating an upper MN 6 age (KÄLIN et al. 2001). The Le Locle Combe Girard bentonite is therefore younger than the Leimbach bentonite of Eastern Switzerland, which is situated in the middle part of MN 6. Based on biostratigraphic data of KÄLIN et al. (2001), the Le Locle bentonite of the northwestern Molasse basin (FAVRE 1911, HOFMANN 1958a) is also younger than the Leimbach bentonite and may possibly correlate to the Waldkirch/Mollen bentonite.
