The Strona-Ceneri is the medium-grade metamorphic product of fine-to-coarse grained arenaceous rocks, sometimes with abundant clay matrix. In contrast with the Scisti dei Laghi, a sedimentary sequence can be recognized. A continuous. sometimes rather thick horizon of mafic rocks (amphibolites) is regarded as the base of the series. These are followed by metasandstones (Ceneri gneisses) showing lithic clasts and peloids, and by variously clay-rich metamorphosed siltites and fine-grained metasandstones ('Gneiss minuti").
