The base of the Late Pleistocene is defined at the base of the Eemian interglacial (Gibbard 2003, Gibbard & Cohen 2008), which approximately coincides with the basis of MIS 5e (MIS = Marine Isotope Stage). In Switzerland, it correlates to the base of the Gondiswil Interglacial.
