p.28: The Erstfeld Zone is the basement unit located southeast of the Innertkirchen-Lauterbrunnen Zone. It is separated from the Innertkirchen-Lauterbrunnen Zone by a mylonitic shear zone locally incorporating Late Carboniferous sedimentary rocks of the Wendenjoch Formation (KAMMER 1989). The strongly retrogradeoverprinted gneisses of the Ferden-Guttannen Zone mark the southern boundary of the Erstfeld Zone. ABRECHT (1994) described in detail the lithological composition of the Erstfeld Zone. In spite of important local variations in the rock associations, one character dominates the whole unit: the polycyclic metamorphic and structural reworking of migmatites derived mainly from sedimentary protoliths. Nevertheless, small local occurrences of granitic gneisses could be interpreted as of magmatic origin (pers. comm. J.Abrecht). Therefore, all rock types present in the Erstfeld Zone were assigned to a unique lithostratigraphic unit called Erstfeld Gneiss Complex.
