Origin of the Name

In Anlehnung an ähnliche Sedimente im Ligurischen Apennin benannt.

Historical Variants

Palombino (Targioni-Tozzeti 1769, dal Piaz & Trevisan 1956), Scisti con/a Palombini, Palombini-Kalke, Schiefer mit Palombini (Büchi & Trümpy 1976), scisti con palombini = schistes à Palombini = schistes à calcaires fins du type Palombino = Mandelschiefer [sic] (Trümpy 1976), Argille a palombini = Palombini-Formation = Palombini-Kalk-Formation (Lüdin 1987), Palombini-Schiefer (Spillmann 1993), pelagic limestone (Mateeva et al. 2017), Tonschiefer mit Palombini-Kalke (Bl. Ibergeregg)

p.9: calcareous slates, dark siliceous shales and calcarenites alternating with dark grey limestones (Argille a Palombini. Emmat Series of Finger [1978], Neocomschiefer of Stöcklin [1949] or Roccabella-Schiefer of Dietrich [1970]), about 20-120 m thick in the Err nappe and up to 30 m in the Platta nappe, overlie the Radiolarite Formation. Dietrich (1969) found planktonic foraminifera (Hedbergella sp. Planomalina sp.. Schackoina sp.. questionable Globigerinoides and Clavihedbergella sp.) within the Argille a Palombini yielding an Aptian to Albian age for the youngest dated rocks in the Piatta ophiolitic sequence.
