Geographical extent
Fossé étroit et linéaire de 30-50 km de large sur 300 km de long entre Bâle (südlichster Grabenrand liegt bei Allschwil (BL)) et Frankfort. Il est bordé à l'est par le Schwarzwald et l'Odenwald et à l'ouest par les Vosges et le Pfälzerwald.
