Die Chiasso-Formation besteht aus grauen Siltiten und Peliten, in die gelegentlich dünne, feine Sandlagen eingeschaltet sind. Die Unterlage der Formation besteht aus unterschiedlich tiefen Niveaus des Mesozoikums und des älteren Tertiärs. Der Kontakt ist leider nirgends aufgeschlossen (siehe Kapitel 5). Überlagert wird die Chiasso-Formation in allen Aufschlüssen durch die Konglomerate der Como-Formation.

Rögl et al. (1975) datierten im Typusprofil die Chiasso-Formation anhand von planktonischen Foraminiferen und kalkigem Nannoplankton als Ober-Rupelian bis Unter-Chattian (NP24, P21).
