Schüpferegg conglomerate and Napf beds are separated by the «basal marls» (MATTER 1964), which form a widespread and laterally continuous characteristic zone of marls and siltstones. These basal marls have yielded several mammal sites, all revealing an MN 4b-age (KÄLIN 1997c). Because of its extensive lateral continuity, this characteristic zone also forms a usefull marker horizon within the Napf alluvial fan.
