p.42: For tectonic reasons, the Diechtergletscher-Tscharren Zone was separated from the Lötschental-Maderanertal Zone, despite the lithological similarity and the close age relationships. This separation is based on the precise chronological relationship of the Diechtergletscher-Tscharren Zone with respect to the intrusion of the Central Aar Granite. The latter intruded 297±2 Ma ago into the metasedimentary, volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks of the Diechtergletscher-Tscharren Zone, dated at 303±4 Ma, at depths of 8–10 km (Figs. 6, 9 b, SCHALTEGGER & CORFU 1995). This observation (FRANKS 1968 a, SCHENKER 1986) implies that the Late Carboniferous land surface became buried to a depth of at least 8 km within a few million years (see also p. 51f.). The Diechtergletscher-Tscharren Zone is divided into two formations: the Diechtergletscher Formation and the Tscharren Formation.
